Tylox® SCB Gasket

Say good-bye to the butyl rope and external wrap! Say hello to fast, clean, simple installation.M

Based upon 50 years of experience sealing Tongue & Groove pipe, the Tylox® SCB gasket uses the multiple sealing fins and tear-drop pressure pocket features of the original Tylox® Type C gasket to bring the advantages of watertight jointing and reduced installation time to users of concrete Box Culverts..

The “achilles heel” of rubber gasketing systems for Box Culverts has always been that of making a circular gasket seal around the square corners.

The SCB gasket utilizes an injection molding process to manufacture four, 90 degree, corners into the multiple-finned gasket strip, thus allowing full peripheral contact between the gasket and the concrete.

The multiple fins are compressed between the Tongue and the Groove, as the Box Culvert section homes, until the gasket forms a solid pack in the annular space, thereby providing a water-tight seal.

Benefits

  •  Water-tight sealing up to 11 ft of head (5 psig) is made possible by the combination of the multiple sealing fins, and the gaskets unique, injection molded corners.
  •  Requires minimal field installation time. Since the Tylox® SCB gasket is installed on the Box Culvert section at the point of manufacture, field installation is as simple as moving the Box Culvert section into position and then homing the joint. No messy, time consuming, Butyl rope and/or external wrap to install.
  •  Self-Centering. The Box Culvert section is self-centered, due to the forces generated by the deformation of the rubber gasket as the box “homes”
  •  Suitability. Tylox® SCB gaskets are suitable for use with all sizes of Tongue and Groove Box Culvert designs with less than 1/2” annular space and up to 5°  slope.
  •  Specification. Tylox® SCB Box Culvert gaskets can be suppied in materials to meet the requirements of ASTM C1677, ASTM C443, CSA A257 or California Greenbook.

Joint Design

Use of the Tylox® SCB™ gasket requires that the Box Culvert Tongue & Groove joint have a 1/4” to 1/2” annular space and 5° max. slope.

Materials

Tylox® SCB Box Culvert gaskets are manufactured from a variety of synthetic rubber compounds, to meet the material requirements of ASTM C1677, ASTM C443, CSA A257 or California Greenbook.

Since the gasket is installed on the Box Culvert section at the point of manufacture, the gasket may sit exposed to the harmful effects from sunlight for extended periods of time. For this reason all Tylox® SCB Box Culvert gaskets are manufactured from materials with enhanced ozone and U.V. resistance.

The applicable specification(s) and usage for a particular gasket are identified by a colored stripe running peripherally along the side sections of the gasket:

  • Standard
  •  C1677, C443, A257 - White Stripe
  •  California Greenbook - Green Stripe
  • Oil-Resistant
  •  C1677, C443, A257 - Orange Stripe
  •  California Greenbook - Yellow Stripe

The above listing covers the standard, North American specifications. Gasket materials are available to meet many other specifications. Please consult your Hamilton Kent representative regarding materials to meet your particular specifications.

Tylox® SuperSeal™ Box Culvert gaskets are not WHIMIS listed. Please refer to the .pdf file in the “Related Resources" section of this page.

Storage and Handling

Proper care of the gaskets prior to installation will ensure maximum ease of installation and maximum sealing properties of the gasket.

All rubber gaskets are required to be stored in a sheltered, cool, dry place at the precasters facility.

Gaskets must not be stored near any electrical equipment that produces ozone. Tylox® SuperSeal™ Box Culvert gaskets are designed to be exposed to UV rays, but should be protected as much as possible from prolonged exposure to sunlight, extreme heat in the summer, and extreme cold, snow and ice in the winter.

All gaskets must be protected from harmful substance such as grit, solvents and petroleum based greases and oils.
