December 2008: Hamilton Kent is seeking Industry assistance regarding life expectancy for pipe gaskets!
Over the last few years there has been a ground swell of discussion regarding life expectancy on pipe products. It was inevitable that this question would trickle down to other system components, and indeed it is now being raised about the gaskets used within pipe joints.

Hamilton Kent has investigated the available research data on the subject, and has found that it is, at best, minimal. Currently we can find data on natural-rubber blocks undergoing ambient environmental aging and other such laboratory tests, but nothing regarding actual, in-field, experience within a piping system.

It is becoming apparent that to answer the question of life expectancy objectively we will have to undertake the research ourselves. To this end we are looking to obtain gaskets, or parts thereof, that have been in service for an extended period, for analysis and evaluation.

We would like to co-opt you and your staff in helping us gather these materials, and would request that should you become involved in a project/situation where an older piping system is being replaced/re-furbished, that you obtain a gasket specimen and as much history as possible (Where installed, when installed, Sanitary/Storm/Water application, etc) and forward it to us at:

Hamilton Kent
740 Baxter Lane,
Winchester, TN 37398
Attn: Olga Mokrous

In this way we hope to build up a database of physical properties of in-service aged materials, from across North America; with an aim to being able to provide some objective performance data to the industry.

Thanking you in advance for your help,

Mike Palmer
